Condolence & Memory Journal

I personally did not know Peyton. I knew his father Noah from school many years ago.
I got into running by following Noah and Peyton and I have went from not able to run a 1/4 mile to running multiple distances up to three full IRONMANS.

This past summer, I happen to be in KY and went to a class with my mother. Without knowing who was all in the class. I met Robin, Peyton's aunt and I knowing Noah and family. Plus knowing about Jennifer's IRONMAN. Let say we both were emotional for Peyton. My mom had not idea what was really going on. Anyway, it was an honor to meet uncles and aunts plus I had the opportunity to run with them just before I left KY 2019.

Thank you Noah and family for what you do. Thank you Peyton,

Today, I ran for Peyton.

My son, who was a classmate of Peyton's at the School of the Arts - Summer SAIL Program last year, just found out about Peyton's passing. He was looking forward to being with Peyton again and when he did not see him around, he inquired and was told the sad news. We want to extend our heartfelt sympathies to your family and pray that God will keep you and comfort you all, now and in the days to come.

I cannot imagine the grief you guys are going through. It's never "right" when a child passes before their parent, and words simply can't express my sorrow for you. Please know that you guys and your family and friends will be in my prayers.

Peyton will be missed greatly and remembered always. I have used him as an example for my boys in the areas of hard work, determination, and positive attitude. He has inspired my boys to give their best in competition, in his words "110%." It was such a joy to see Peyton's success in javelin this year, knowing how hard he worked for it. He would have achieved his goal at Nationals. Noah and Jennifer, thank you for sharing your boy with us. He was beautiful, you couldn't have raised a better young man. He was blessed with a loving family and he shined because of it. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I love you little Peyton and I will miss your smiling face coming up to my door almost every day. "Can Bryce play?" I think of you every time I look out of my kitchen window, especially Saturday mornings. I am glad we were all able to spend some fun time at the pool a few weeks ago. You talked me into it when I hesitated taking 4 little boys and 1 girl to the pool saying, "don't worry Mrs Owens I'll make sure everybody behaves." And you were right, we had a fun time. Such a good helper, such good boy, such a good friend to Bryce and Emily and his parents.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family as you try to cope with this devastating loss. Though I never had the privilege of meeting your beloved son, I have no doubt he knew how deeply he was loved. He was a blessing to you all as you were to him. He is, and forever will be, with you in both mind and spirit. He will never leave you hearts. Your loss breaks my heart. May you find comfort in your memories and the knowledge that he loved his family deeply. The hurt will never heal, one merely learns to manage the pain as time moves forward. God bless you all.

The pain of losing this child is tremendous and our hearts go out to the family who will never stop missing him. Knowing him, reading about his accomplishments and hearing the testimonies at the funeral yesterday revealed Peyton to be a tremendously accomplished person, especially for a nine year old boy! That child lived large. His enthusiasm, thoughtfulness, committment and drive are lessons that we can all keep in our hearts. Those parts of him are immortal.

The service was beautiful today. We were struck so much by your amazing grace and courage Jennifer and Noah, no wonder Peyton was such an amazing little cub. Your words were beautiful and I have to let you know that in a time of such sadness for you both, Noah, you hugged Kaine and told him how proud you were of his throwing. He talked about that all the way home. You are truly selfless. We are so inspired by you.... This is not judgement day for little Peyton, only morning

My dear, dear friend Stewart and family. I am so thankful that I had an opportunity to meet Peyton, referred to lovingly as The Boy, by Stewart. When the two of them would walk into the office, they were always grinning from ear to ear. You could see and sense the deep love , admiration and bond between the two of them. Nothing pleased Stewart more than to take "The Boy" around and introduce him to everyone. The glow on both their faces said everything. Stewart, I enjoyed our lengthly brag sessions about our grandchildren. My heart is broken for you and your family.

Peyton Moore had more leadership qualities, character, ability and determination at eight years old than most any grown man I have met in my life. He singlehandedly carried his basketball team this year, and he never complained about anything. Peyton helped feed the ball to kids who otherwise never would have scored a basket, he put up with getting fouled all game long, and fought through any and all adversity that came his way. I thought he would be in the NBA one day. God must have needed him now for his team. I can only imagine he is running, jumping, smiling, laughing, and shooting basketballs up in Heaven.

(In no way are those thoughts of Peyton intended to diminish the realization that there is horrible hurt, devastation, and loss that his family is suffering today. Peyton's Dad, his Mom, His Granddad, they all loved him from what I observed more than these words can describe, and they will need our prayers and support for a long long time. I am so sorry. I am.).

Peyton is a warrior. He was the best little basketball player I ever saw. I'll never, ever, forget him.

PART II

I was super blessed to spend a couple of days with Peyton and his family at Thanksgiving last year. He was the only kid among adults, and to keep us entertained and adequately challenged, Peyton organized two tournaments, complete with brackets, a chess tournament and a kendama tournament. There were winners' brackets and also the dreaded losers' brackets haha, which I quickly advanced to after Peyton handily checkmated me in our first game! (And I do know how to play chess, btw.) Peyton also somehow got me to play basketball with the boys one day, which I wouldn't believe myself if I hadn't been there. It was me and Noah v. Peyton and Stewart. Great fun, though a little rough and I got fouled hard a couple of times. When I needed to call time to try to breathe again, Peyton would check on me with a compassionate word of encouragement to get back in the game.

Everyone was incredibly welcoming, but none more so than Peyton.always finding little opportunities while chilling in the living room or walking my dog to ask me about my life. The one moment that touched my heart in a way that I shall never forget happened right when it was time to go. Jen and Noah were calling Peyton to get in the car. He lingered, as kids do. But he didn't linger to run down the dock or catch a frog or shoot one more basket. He lingered to ask me, his Grandma's friend, whether I would be there for Thanksgiving again next year, and he let me know that he really hoped that I would.

My wish and my prayer for all of us who know Peyton is to grieve deeply and completely, no holds barred. Because somewhere beyond this excruciating pain of our loss, Peyton will continue to inspire us to give more fully, to love more deeply, to play with abandon, to truly care for and show interest in the people we meet, and to always do our best.

Godspeed, sweet Peyton. You loved and taught us well.

PART I

Peyton's grandma, Paula, is my best friend. I moved away from Mt. Pleasant before Peyton was born, and so was only graced with his shiny presence every now and then. But just about every time Paula and I talked, she shared with me some insightful comment Peyton had made, or wise question he had asked, or some profound topic they had discussed. At first I thought it was a typical grandma's loving exaggeration. It became clear as time went on that this child was exceptional, in many ways.

Even now, looking at his photos I see such a depth and a twinkle to his expression that makes me think, he is one who knows. Here I am with half a century on the spiritual path, still trying to figure it out, and Peyton seems to just get it. I'm not sure how else to express this. Yes, he was fully a nine-year-old boy, the goofy class clown (I've heard) who earned straight A's and perfect attendance, who won national sports awards, who prided himself on talking more than anyone he knows. He was that full on expression of boy, yet also had an atmosphere at times which I've likewise felt in the presence of some wise old souls I've known.

Dear Noah and Jen,

There are no words but there is an Almighty God whose thoughts are much higher than ours, therefore there is no answer to the "why". It clearly seems that Peyton touched many lives in his short 9 years...perhaps his work was done and now in Heaven, where there is no pain or tears, Peyton lives on with Jesus. I ask God to send ministering angels to be with you through the rest of your lives to give you some form of comfort until you too are called home by the Lord and you can re-join with your son...and what a glorious reunion that will be! My family and I will keep your famiy in our prayers, Noah.

I remember Peyton well from the first ever Run for the Yorktown 5K race I helped organize for the Yorktown Association. Peyton was the only kid in his age group to run the race that first year and he won a medal. He was very excited and it was special for us to have our very first child participant. Peyton and his Dad, Noah were photographed together at the race and were in an article about the race in the Moultrie News. I remember how sweet it was for Father and Son to share their love for running and race together. Peyton will always have a special place in the history of our 5K Run and I will always remember him racing with his Dad.

Words cannot describe how I am feeling right now. Peyton was an inspiration to everyone that meet him. He was an AMAZING althlete and neighbor. I remember the first time I ever babysat him (and my first babysitting job ever).... I am walking across the street very nervously, and wondering what I will do to entertain him. When I rang the bell, I could here Peyton running to the door. He opened it so quickly, I knew he was excited to have a babysitter. He said "I'm ready!! Were gonna have fun!" As soon as he said that I was no longer nervous. I knew this would be fun. I remember playing with all of his cars, watching movies, playing games, and bonding. He would tell me things about school, friends, and family. I felt so blessed that he would trust me with his secrets. I love Peyton with all my heart and he will always be in my heart. He truely was the brother I never had. Love you Peyton :)

Words can't express the incomprehensible loss of Peyton, he was like a member of our family and a great friend to Bryce, who loved him like a brother. Peyton was a give it all you got kind of guy in all aspects of life. We, the Owens Family are heartbroken over the loss of your precious child, he was a vital and vibrant part of our daily lives. We are grateful and thankful to you for allowing us to share him as a part of our family. He will always live in our hearts and consciences & he has given us all, particularly Bryce, a wonderful example to live by. Peyton was attentive to Emily as well; Lydia & I use to joke that Peyton would be the only young man that we would consider calling on Emily as a teen. With four older brothers and a very protective Dad, I think that speaks clearly to the kind of young man we knew Peyton to be and the blessing he was to our family.

Peyton was great inspiration to myself and the members of the Semper Fi Fund staff. At such a young age to be thinking beyond himself onto doing something for a charity is amazing. I was inspired by his thoughtful endeavor to raise funds for the Semper Fi Fund while he ran the last miles of the Kid's 100 Mile Ultra Marathon. Being a Coach myself, I was excited to see such a spirit in the running world. Their family surpassed their goal in fundraising and raised nearly $6,000 for the fund...helping so many. His spirit will carry on in every person I talk to, everyone I tell of such a young sole whom was ready and willing to give without even knowing us...He helped me...I am paralyzed veteran from the chest down aided by the Semper Fi Fund...by his fundraising. He helped me and my family. Thank you Peyton. Thank you! You will not be forgotten.

Dear Noah and Jen,
Please know that we are just heart broken about Peyton.
Virginia was just reminding me last night about the first day of Kindergarten at MPA in Mrs Carter's class. Peyton was the only familiar face she knew from O'Quinn. When she saw Peyton he smiled that big smile at her and made her feel better about being there. She knew everything was going to be okay. Even though he went on ahead to first grade shortly after that first day, Virginia still remembers how comforting it was to have him near her.
He had that peaceful and calming presence about him. He was an old soul with a big , loving spirit.

May Peyton's soul and spirit always shine on you and through you to bring you and your family the peace and strength to move forward. What an amazing young man ! We pray for God to bless you and gently bring you through the pain.
Love to you both and your family ,

Fly free spirit, fly! Although it will feel like an eternity for all of us here to get to join him in the life hereafter, for him it will be only a split second as the eternal family reunion begins. May his spirit and love live on and keep us strong until that day. Thank you Peyton for your wonderful example of a life well lived; as Christ lives with you now and not just in you.

Noah & Jen, We learned of Peyton's passing from our son Thomas Skelton III. Though we never had the pleasure of meeting your sweet son, after reading about him from your friends, it is clear that, even at his tender age, he positively impacted so many people. His kindness, generosity & passion are rare gifts, and that he chose to share them, is a tribute to the kind of parents and family you were and always will be. We light this candle knowing that heaven is all the brighter because Peyton is with Our Lord. We llo forward to the day when we can run with him and know that day will bring us great joy. Our hearts and prayers go out to you both. Patty & Mark Wisniewski, Clemson, SC

Noah & Jen,
Our entire church family on the opposite coast from you guys have not stopped praying for you! Our heartfelt sympathies.

As a runner I've been inspired and challenged by your blog Noah, and some of my favorite posts were about you and your boy Peyton. I frequently run alone with the Lord (no music, no companions). Today was typical. But I ran an extra mile with you and your family in my prayers... every breath a reminder of your need for grace, comfort, and peace.

Be assured that I will continue to keep you in my prayers. Grace and peace!

Dear Noah and Jen -

Everyone at the office is heartbroken. Your son was an amazing young man. He did more in his nine years than most do in a lifetime. He seems to have touched so many people and lives with his spirit. The world was certainly blessed to have been in his presence. None of us can know what you are going through right now but know that we will be there for you and will do whatever we can to help. I pray that God will bring peace and strength to you both.

Please know that you and your family are in our prayers during this very difficult time. I only knew Peyton for a short time but I will cherish the opportunity God provided to me to get to know Peyton while coaching the Redskins.
